This episode was the titled ‘The Choice‘ and it was the first installment of the show that is in its second season. The past four episodes had been brilliant so it is kind of understandable that they would have felt let down that this did not continue with the tempo of the previous episodes.

It was not as if the episode was poor but it had some hard competition. It was in fact an interesting episode that did move the show forward. Catherin got to play some delicate cat and mouse game with the Pope and Cardinal. The Pope and Cesare wanted her to come to Rome willingly but she resisted.
But she had been a bedmate to the Cardinal and was basically toying with him.
She successfully played her game of seduction and the Cardinal swallowed the pill without question. And se set him up nicely before turning him down and even that would have naturally got fans wondering. Catherina gave a brilliant performance in this episode and one of the things that could be observed was that she would make a very formidable foe if she felt someone was on her path.
She is different from her cousin Giovanni who got stabbed by Cesare and wasn’t much of an adversary. But Cesare went above board with the way he handled that matter. Granted it was a combination of getting back at him for what he did to Lucrezia and at Catherina it was a gruesome way to go out.
And he killed him in anger. This underscored what Cesare is capable of doing. He was fortunate not to have been caught as the guards came snooping around. Everything points to him displaying such rage in the future and things may not work in his favor then.
But the episode gradually built up towards the end as his act of murder was intermingled with the collapse of St. Peter’s that was struck by lightning. It was the combined symphony of man mad and human destruction that gave a penultimate end to the episode.
And Pope Alexander with his history of being cruel was an epitome of what a Pope should be like during the disaster. It was a touching scene as it was easy to see why the ordinary citizenry would place the office so high. So even if the episode did not start as well as some would have wanted, it picked up and finished brilliantly.
Della Rovere ultimate revenge plan is still building slowly but fans can see that progress is being made. It is also interesting to note that they Lucrezia, Vanozza and Giulia are securing positions that they can use in the future. The episode was interesting.
